The waterfalls of the Jura
The Herisson falls, an exceptional natural site born of the meeting of two streams that spring from the superb waters of lake Bonlieu and lake Ilay, to join together in a surprising series of falls, each one more beautiful than the last. The Herisson falls consist of 7 main falls, out of the 31 that exist in the valley of which the most famous are le Eventail (65m), the Grand Saut (60m), the Gour Bleu, the Saut de la Forge and the Saut Girard (35m). A 7½ kilometre walk will provide you with nearly three hours of delight and cool air : a simple adventure at the heart of nature. The Herisson valley is overflowing with its waterfalls, but also its history and past. Impetuous and constantly flowing, the waters of the Herisson falls have for a long time served the men at work who from very early on in the Middle Ages, settled beside the river.
At the bottom of the spectacular Eventail falls, an audiovisual and museographical space opened in July 2003: The Maison des Cascades. It will take you into an amusing and surprising world at the heart of a natural heritage classified as remarkable : the Herisson valley, its waterfalls, its history, its legends.
The Maison des Cascades is open from April to October.
To get the best out of the listed site of the Herisson falls, it is important to respect certain instructions, because some stretches of the path are steep and slippery. It is strictly forbidden to camp or light a fire, to use a motorised vehicle, to collect flowers or leave rubbish. This is essential for the respect of nature and the Herisson falls.
