French municipal district located in the Franche-Comté region and the department of the Jura. It is a green town with a population of 9,000 people.
Champagnole, also called the “pearl of the Jura”, is a little town at the geographic centre of tourism in the Jura, located on the east bank of the Ain and at the foot of Mount Rivel. Champagnole has a central position at the heart of the Jura. The town is the gateway to the plateau region next to the summits of the Jura mountain range and of Switzerland. According to the tourist information office of Champagnole, it is a town that was rebuilt after a fire at the end of the 18th century, with few memories of the past remaining. It is a good place to start exploring the surrounding area. Viewpoints, springs, untouched valleys, waterfalls and natural lakes (Chalain and Vouglans ) make up a group of picturesque sites within a circle of 15 to 25 kilometres. The Nordic site of Haute-Joux and Mont Noir are more adapted to cross-country skiing. The numerous neighbouring towns provide various activities all year round. Mount Rivel that overlooks Champagnole was once an important Gallo-roman site where the foundation of a temple provides a reminder of the intense activity of a once very busy sanctuary. We are in Franche-Comté where invasions were numerous, the fire of 28th April 1798 ravaging Champagnole in less than three hours. The Avenue de la République has been rebuilt. Today, it has a 19th-20th century town centre, to which the river and the Belle-Frise promenade give a pretty and pleasant character. Of course, there are hotels, furnished tourist accommodations, restaurants, a swimming pool, a campsite, a cinema, shops... It is a country with landscapes, restful and calm, vast pastures, wonderful viewpoints, forests of fir trees and white water rapids, waterfalls and numerous lakes. In the region, high quality cheese is made : The Comté. It is also a land providing good local food products where trout, mushrooms and other delights make for an exquisite marriage with butter and cream, under the auspices of some venerable nutty flavoured wines. At the centre of the town, near the town hall, you will find the tourist information office of Champagnole.
